Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. One of the funniest moments isn't in the book, it's in the table of contents. From chapter titles like "I accidentally vaporize my pre-algebra teacher" to "I become the lord of the bathroom" Rick Riordan's chapters just get funnier and funnier. For a full list of his chapter titles go to this link (http://camphalfblood.wikia.com/wiki/Chapter_Lists). Also, if you have watched the movie it is way way different than the book.
Percy (Perseus Jackson is his full name) is a normal guy with ADHD and dyslexia until his mom and his friend Grover tells him that he is being followed by the Minotaur. They tell him that there is a safe place from the Minotaur, a camp. He runs to the camp with a Minotaur behind him. He tries to escape with his mom but the Minotaur gets to his mom first and makes her vanish . Percy somehow kills the Minotaur and gets to camp.
There he learns that he is a demigod (half mortal, half ancient Greek god). Weird, right? At the camp, they decide to play capture the flag. Normal. Until he learns you can use swords (no maiming though) and it's in the woods where there are a lot of monsters roaming around. He's doing great till Clarisse comes into the scene (a very rude daughter of Ares - god of war who likes nothing more than hitting and swearing). He's about to lose against her until she shoves him into a creek. Suddenly power flows into him and he stops Clarisse with ease. Suddenly everybody kneels to him. Percy is surprised but when he looks up he realizes what had happened. A blue trident is floating above his head. The sign of Poseidon. That means he is a son of Poseidon!

Then he is ushered in to the attic where the oracle of Delphi tells him:
"You shall go west and face the god who has turned,
You shall find what was stolen and see it safely returned,
You shall be betrayed by one who calls you a friend,
And you shall fail to save what matters most, in the end"
This starts Percy, Annabeth, and Grover on a quest to save Zeus' lightning bolt before he starts a war. He travels to the underworld to face Hades but realizes its not him. Then they find out its Ares and Percy fights him and wins, getting the master bolt back.
I like this book because it's really funny and Percy is 12 years old. That is about my age and in many ways we think alike. Also Rick Riordan seems to have found a way to fit this into reality which is pretty cool. The story has a lot of suspense and at the end most of the mysteries are gone but there are a few left. I recommend this book to fantasy lovers, anybody who likes mythology, or people who like a funny book. I like how Rick Riordan gets the prophecy to rhyme and make sense.
